Schooling for Digital Citizens - Article Analysis

Article Analysis 1 - EDU 6376 - Inquiry Based Research Methods

The following article analysis identifies how much knowledge public school teachers in Lebanon have about digital citizenship. The researcher surveyed teachers about their perception and the value of instruction in the nine areas of digital citizenship to answer and address the research problem and questions.

The instrument used for the research paper included a survey called “Digital Citizenship For Teachers.” Public school teachers completed it and gave their input on the nine elements of digital citizenship classified into three domains; Respect Yourself and Others, Educate Yourself and Others, and Protect Yourself and Others. The data collection method was retrieved from Quantitative data gathered through a survey analyzed statistically and Qualitative data collected from the results of an interview analyzed using thematic-based analysis.

The research findings showed that teachers between 41-45 years, most of them females with a license degree and teaching elementary, needed to learn more about digital citizenship terms because they had a dispersed perspective, diffused understanding, and scattered perception of the three domains of the nine areas of digital citizenship. Also, it explained that the teachers only explained when they had a big problem or through teaching social studies. And 1 of the ten teachers gave herself a score of 5/10, and the rest rated themselves below.

The study concludes that teachers must know more about the digital citizenship term and the corresponding nine necessary elements, and the author recommended that a similar study should be conducted for administrators and the community to recompile more information.

I found the article very helpful; the researcher explained digital citizenship, the nine elements, and the domains. Also, the researcher did a great job analyzing the data and answering all the research questions; my only criticism is that the survey was focused on a small group of teachers and schools and was limited to Beirut only. I think it can be a great idea to implement the study and its instruments in different school settings and different countries. Overall, it is an excellent article, and I learned more about my research topic.
