Article Analysis 3 - EDU 6376 - Inquiry Based Research Methods

In the article titled “Methods Used in Digital Citizenship: A Systematic Literature Review by Hawamdeh and Hamayel (2022), the authors aim to study various methods and approaches used in digital citizenship. They analyze data from three academic databases and the importance of digital citizenship and the environment in the 21st century. The main objective of the research is to answer the question: “What are the methods used in digital citizenship?”

The data collection method was to acquaint three different scholars with databases frequently used as Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and Google Scholar. They utilized the search and advanced search options to refine their results while searching for terms like digital citizenship, digital literacy, digital native, digital competence, the trend in digital citizenship, the importance of digital citizenship, and methods used in digital citizenship.

The data collection procedure of the study was as follows. The researchers identified 512 journal articles on various topics through different databases. Three different databases were assessed, and researchers screened 319 articles, eliminating 125. One hundred ninety-four articles were extracted for eligibility, and 28 were excluded, leaving only 166 articles that were assessed for quality, and 16 were excluded. Ultimately, only 150 papers were selected based on being more recent publications or peer-reviewed.

They analyzed the data, a narrative synthesis was conducted. First, the 150 journal articles were reviewed to confirm their relevance to the study’s objective. The researchers used codes to classify the journals according to the criteria based on the database, type of document, language, study field, methodology, and publication year.

In conclusion, the study found that not having adequate digital literacy can result in improper use of digital technology. On the other hand, practicing good digital citizenship can benefit individuals and society. Additionally, the study also revealed that the Internet, social media, and technological tools can offer opportunities to develop professional networking and communication skills. In my professional view, digital technology offers advantages that enhance work quality and education. Nevertheless, it is crucial to use digital technology appropriately.
