In the article “How to assess responsible digital citizenship? Economics students in the digital world” by Görög, Vivien, and Udvari (2023), the authors conducted a pilot survey among university students to evaluate responsible digital citizenship. The study aimed to identify the distinctions between digital citizens and responsible digital citizens.
A questionnaire survey was utilized to conduct the research. It was based on the characteristics of a digital citizen as defined by Choi et al. (2017) and the 5-factor model questionnaire, including components related to responsible behavior in the digital environment, created by Nordin et al. (2016). The researchers collected data from 123 responses obtained through a pilot questionnaire survey among students at a Hungarian university.
The data was analyzed using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a factor analysis test to extract the most important information from a data set. The study identified nine principal components that measure responsible digital citizenship. The authors used Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) based on the nine components and identified three clusters to classify responses into mutually exclusive groups based on similarities.
The clusters showed that digital citizens are health-conscious and respectful but only moderately concerned with their online security. They are generally attentive in their interactions but sometimes act irresponsibly when it only affects themselves. Additionally, some digital citizens aspire to be responsible but may still have room for some irresponsible behavior.
In conclusion, the questionnaire effectively measures responsible digital citizenship. Grouping students into clusters based on their level of digital responsibility can aid in creating action plans and developing strategies to improve online behavior. In my opinion, implementing this survey at various levels of education, not just universities, and in different countries would be beneficial. Overall, it was a great article.
