Engagement using the Universal Design for Learning Framework
EDUA 6378 - Integration of Tech into the Curriculum
How Can Technology Fail to Engage Students?
There is a fine line on how technology is applied to students’ learning, and if the teaching strategies or applications are flawed, the student ends up disengaged or could improvise and take the easy way out. For example, students sometimes copy and paste information from online sources, all in an attempt to get better grades, but this can have negative consequences on their education. This is the major cause of today’s student’s lack of expertise and understanding in their chosen field of study.
Also, using artificial intelligence (A.I.) in classrooms to assist students and teachers is a promising concept. However, it is essential to consider the ethical implication of A.I. in education, such as the potential for student cheating and its impact on student learning. While it may be easy to implement A.I. technology, it is essential to evaluate the consequences and impact in the classroom carefully. Sal Khan (TED, 2023) argues that you can “mitigate” some of these fears or concerns by setting parameters on how A.I. technology is used in the classroom. ChatGPT is at the heart of this controversy, and some question how students should be allowed to use it. ChatGPT is a writing assistance tool that supports and enhances students' writing abilities.
I have shared two examples of how technology can fail students; in both cases, it could have been mitigated with understanding and planning to utilize technological tools in the classroom best. Teachers need to understand the capabilities of the technology they are introducing in the classroom, how it works and plan effective lessons, and ensure the implementation parameters are engaging properly by students.
