E-Learning & Media Production in Instructional Design
EDUA 6377 - Instructional Design
Online learning has become increasingly popular in today's digital age, especially with the recent pandemic-induced shift towards remote work and education. However, online learning comes with its own set of challenges, including designing effective instructional materials and facilitating meaningful engagement between students and instructors. This is where the Pedagogically Effective Online Instructional Design Model and the Community of Inquiry framework come in.
Pedagogically Effective Online Instructional Design Model (PEOIDM)
Dr. Li-Ling Chen, a Professor at California State University, developed a Pedagogically Effective Online Instructional Design Model to be used as a framework for developing and delivering online learning courses. According to Dr. L. Chen, the model is based on learning theories and pedagogical philosophy and is designed to assist and support learners in promoting active, meaningful, and engaging learning. (Chen, 2016)
Dr. Li-Ling Chen’s model consists of four stages: Identify, Select, Create, and Access. (Chen, 2016) According to Dr. Chen, there are several advantages of applying the proposed Pedagogical Effective Online Instructional Design Model for online course design.
The Community of Inquiry Model
The Community of Inquiry Model provides a theoretical model for facilitating meaningful engagement between students and instructors in online learning environments. to Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000), the Community of Inquiry model proposes that learning happens within a community through the interaction of three essential elements: cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence. Social Presence refers to the degree to which learners feel connected with each other and with the instructor in the online learning environment. Cognitive Presence refers to the degree to which learners are able to construct meaning and solve problems through interaction with the instructional materials and with each other. Teaching Presence refers to the degree to which the instructor designs and facilitates the learning experience and provides feedback and support to learners.
By integrating the Pedagogically Effective Online Instructional Design Model and the Community of Inquiry Model, instructional designers, and educators can create effective online learning experiences that are engaging, meaningful, and effective. Below, you will find how the two modules can be used to create an engaging and pedagogically effective online course.
