Kim and Choi's article “Developmental of youth digital citizenship scale and Implication for educational setting” seeks to identify the Digital Citizenship Scale for adolescents as perceived by teachers responsible for their student’s digital citizenship education. Using a convenience sampling method, they also aim to highlight the needs and direction of school-based education that will satisfy the identified Digital Citizenship Scales.
The purpose of the study focuses on addressing the following research questions:
What are the categories and factors of Digital Citizen Scale for adolescents from the teacher’s perspective?
What are the guidelines for proper digital citizenship education for adolescents?
In this study, the researcher identified four categories: SAFE framework (Self-Identity, Activity in online, Fluency, and Ethics for Digital environment) using the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for students for digital citizenship. The Digital Citizen Scale mainly focuses on adolescents and their level of participation in the digital world. The five-factor model is composed: Ethics for Digital environment, Fluency for Digital environment, Activity in Online, Self-identity in digital world, and Social/cultural engagement.
The method for data collection was a survey distributed by convenience sampling method to 200 participants. Ninety-seven participants were pre-service teachers currently enrolled in Teachers’ College and 103 in-service teachers in Korea as of 2017.
The data collection procedure for this study was conducting Executing Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), where the reliability and validity of the scale were found to be statistically significant. And Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) revealed that the digital citizenship scale was appropriate. The researcher analyzed the data using the Internet Efficacy Scale. As a result, the correlation between the total scores of the Digital Citizenship Scale and Internet Efficacy Scale showed a positive correlation indicating the validity of the digital citizenship scale.
In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the internet and social media could cultivate adolescents that participate in the digital world. In addition, the study measures the digital citizenship that the young generation should have and suggest the necessary implementation of digital citizenship in education. Teachers play an essential role in students’ life and should act as mentors to use digital devices. Overall, I believe it is a great article; it can be used in different countries and help students to become better digital citizens.
