Artificial Intelligence in Education

EDUA 6382 - Basic Application Media & Technology

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become increasingly popular in various fields, including education. AI has the potential to revolutionize the way we learn and teach by providing personalized learning experiences, intelligent tutoring systems, and improving student outcomes.

During his TED Talk video" How AI Could Save (Not Destroy) Education," Sal Khan (TED, 2023), presented a compelling argument about why Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the future. He referenced a statement made by Alexander Wang, who suggested that rule breakers, totalitarian governments, and criminal organizations will only accelerate AI development, ultimately leading to a dystopian state where the bad actors have better AIs than the good ones. This is the moral dilemma for all of us when contemplating whether to move forward and thoroughly investigate, explore, and develop better versions of AI.

One of the arguments presented by Sal Khan stated, “There are folks who take a more pessimistic view of AI, they say this is scary, there are all these dystopian scenarios, we maybe want to slow down, we want to pause.” (TED, 2023) We should move cautiously but intentionally forward and create structures along the way, “guardrails,” as Sal Khan referred to them; we don’t need to stop or pause simply because we fear the future. The future is going to come whether we are ready for it or not. Throughout history, there have been debates about whether we should progress, slow down, or stop. This same conversation arose during the Industrial Revolution, as Sal Khan mentioned in his discourse. There were challenges; workers had to learn new skills. Thus, education was the answer; child labor was an issue, and child protective laws were passed. Through collaboration, humans and governments found solutions to these issues. The world became exponentially more efficient in manufacturing outputs with fewer but more skilled workers.

Additionally, during his presentation, Sal Khan mentioned “The 2 Sigma Problem. The search for Methods of Group Instruction as Effective as One-to-One Tutoring.” (TED, 2023) Then he presented this as “The 2 Sigma Opportunity: Using AI to Provide a One-to-One Tutor for Every Student and a Teaching Assistant for Every Teacher.” This idea sounds very impressive and has the potential to revolutionize the education system, and he provided numerous examples of how AI is helping students at Khan’s Academy. Those examples of how to effectively implement AI in the classroom were truly impressive. Our students deserve the best we can afford to provide them, and the fear of cheating or not learning to read is not reason enough to explore the practical applications of AI in the classrooms. The education system should invest time in creating an environment where AI can be just one other piece of technology that can enhance the classroom and students’ learning.

In conclusion, the use of AI in education has the potential to transform the education system by providing personalized learning experiences and enhancing student achievements. However, addressing concerns about bias and the loss of human interaction is essential to ensure that AI is used equitably, enhancing educators' role. As AI continues to evolve, it is crucial to consider its potential impact on education and work towards creating a future where technology and human connection coexist harmoniously.
